Iranian-Canadian artist Parviz Tanavoli with one of his works of art at his home in West Vancouver on Feb. 15. Tanavoli invited a Vancouver Sun columnist into his home for a tour and to discuss travel bans, his sculpture on display at the Museum of Modern Art, and not being celebrated in his hometown.

Eighty-four-year-old Art Skill looks over old typewriters in his workshop. The owner-operator of Poulsen’s Office Products is one of the last typewriter repairmen in the Lower Mainland. In its heyday, the company repaired the 60-plus typewriters of the Vancouver Sun and Province newsrooms, where he had a full-time team of 35 repairmen. Today, Skill works quietly in his shop still loving the business that brought him close to so many colourful people and writers.
An emotional farewell to longtime Canucks favourite Alex Burrows as he says goodbye to team staff at his last news conference on Feb. 27 after being traded to the Ottawa Senators.

A restored Vimy Ridge cross makes its way back home to the Seaforth Armoury on March 16. The cross was created in memory of the many Seaforth Highlanders killed in the First World War battle 100 years ago. Vancouver reservists Samuel Holmes and Travis Hoheisel (right) carry life-size photographs of fallen soldiers. The young reservists were about the same age as the men in the First World War photographs.

B.C. law graduates Carly Teillet and Mark Stevens hug at the UBC First Nations Longhouse on May 27 for the spring graduation celebration. Both Teillet and Stevens are descendants of Métis leaders Louis Riel and Gabriel Dumont.

Surfer Jarrett Vaughn takes advantage of the weather to try and catch a wave kicked up at Kits Point on Oct. 17. The Lower Mainland was hit by the first storm of the season, causing power outages and wet, soggy and windy conditions.

Skaters take advantage of the chilly weather on Trout Lake on Jan. 12. The lake was open for skating for the second time in a week after being unsafe for skating for 20 years.

The prime minister in action at Electronic Arts Canada Capture Lab in Burnaby on May 18. Justin Trudeau met with local tech and business leaders for a roundtable on how the federal government can boost B.C.’s tech sector.
Residents of the Balmoral Hotel leave for the last time on June 12 pending renovations. Vancouver city hall forced the closure of the hotel for tenants after city staff visited the building and raised significant safety concerns. Mayor Gregor Robertson criticized the Sahotas for letting the Balmoral fall into squalor and disrepair.
