JUNIOR HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Dukes' Doyle nets key goal for Team Canada East at World Jr. A Challenge

Article content

Colin Doyle (in photo) of the Wellington Dukes scored the tying goal at 19:41 of the third period and Team Canada East went on to defeat Switzerland 3-2 in overtime in the fifth-place game at the 2017 World Jr. A Hockey Challenge on the weekend in Truro, NS.

Doyle is fourth in team scoring for Wellington with 35 points in 30 games (10 goals, 25 assists) — including three on the power play, one shorthanded and one game-winner. From Campbellford, Doyle was one of three Dukes on the Team Canada East roster for this year's World Jr. A Challenge event along with fellow forward Ben Evans and defenceman Matt Snell.

Also on the squad were Belleville-born defenceman Aidan Girduckis of the CCHL's Carleton Place Canadians and Bloomfield's Jett Alexander, a goaltender with the OJHL's North York Rangers.

Earlier in the tournament, Team Canada West tripped Team Canada East 4-3 in O.T. in a quarterfinal contest. Team Canada West went on to defeat the U.S. 5-1 in the gold-medal game.

The Czech Republic doubled up on Russia, 4-2, in the bronze-medal match.

Meanwhile, the Trenton Golden Hawks salvaged a point while the Dukes went point-less in OJHL regular-season action Friday night in the Quinte region.

Hawks 4, Fury 4

At Community Gardens, Whitby's Liam Robertson's second goal of the game tied the tilt and two O.T. periods decided nothing in a 4-4 tie between the East Division rivals.

Shaun Bily, Kevin Stiles, Max Ewart and Michael Silveri with the third-period go-ahead goal scored for the Golden Hawks. Jonathan Pace, Gage Stephney, Steven Elliott, Caleb Boman, Mac Lewis, Bily and Stiles earned assists.

Will Rawski was tested 34 times in the TGH cage while his Trenton teammates fired 44 pucks at Whitby goalkeeper Nate McDonald.

Power plays were: G-Hawks, 0-for-4; Whitby, 1-2.

Trenton's record changed to 16-16-2-1; Whitby was 8-18-4-1.

Attendance was 428.

ON DECK: Sunday at Newmarket, 2:30 p.m.

Patriots 3, Dukes 1

At Essroc Arena, the visitors led 2-0 on goals by Oliver Benwell and Lee Lapid before Daniel Panetta got the locals on the board with a shorthanded effort at 6:38 of Period 2 from Andrew Rinaldi.

That would account for all of Wellington's offence, however, as Toronto got one more marker from Ryan Wells (power play) and refused to surrender its two-goal margin, thanks in large part to a solid 31-save effort by Patriots puckstopper and First-Star selection, Owen Liskiewicz.

Jonah Caprioti made 30 stops in the Dukes net.

On the power play, Dukes fired blanks on five opportunities; Patriots were 1-for-7.

Announced attendance was 431.

The East Division-leading Dukes dropped to 22-6-3-4; Patriots, third in the South, were 25-7-0-1.

ON DECK: Sunday at Buffalo, 3:30 p.m.
