The storms were part of a powerful system that unleashed heavy rains, lightning and strong winds through the South over the weekend.

The system carved a path toward the Northeast through the Ohio Valley, where a suspected tornado damaged a handful of homes and sent at least six people to the hospital.

The Times Gazette reported several homes and businesses were damaged after an apparent tornado struck Shelby, Ohio, at around 4pm on Sunday.

Later that night the National Weather Service issued tornado watch warnings for parts of Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Weather conditions in the Northeast are expected to mellow out through the middle of the week before more rain moves in by the weekend.

In the Midwest, rain and thunderstorms are expected midweek, threatening to trigger flooding in areas still reeling from floods last month.
