The provincial government has put the Chilcotin River area on flood watch on Sunday after a three-day rainfall caused the river to rise to capacity.
The region near Williams Lake has seen 75 mm of rainfall over the weekend, causing the river to rise as much as quickly as 60 cm every 24 hours. Another 10 mm of rainfall is expected today.
The notice means the river “will approach or may exceed bankfull” and that “flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may occur,” according to a release from the River Forecast Centre.
The centre forecasts the river’s height will peak on Monday and that it will “quickly recede” afterwards, but advises the public to remain away from the area in the meantime.
If waters continue to rise, a flood warning may be issued.
