Born in Fredericton, N.B., Grant played junior hockey with the Peterborough Petes and made his NHL debut with the Canadiens during the 1965-66 season, playing one game. The Canadiens traded Grant, a right-winger, to the Minnesota North Stars in the summer of 1968, along with Claude Larose, in exchange for a first-round pick at the 1972 NHL Draft (Dave Gardner), future considerations and cash. Grant would win the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie with the North Stars in 1968-69 when he posted 34-31-65 totals in 75 games.

Grant played 13 seasons in the NHL with the Canadiens, North Stars, Detroit Red Wings and Los Angeles Kings, posting 263-272-535 totals in 736 games.

After his playing career ended, Grant coached the University of New Brunswick and the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL, then became an assistant coach at St. Thomas University in his hometown. The Grant-Harvey Centre, an arena in Fredericton, is named in honour of Grant and fellow New Brunswick native Fred Harvey, who were teammates with the North Stars.
