History is always written by the winners, which means many important components may be left out of the generally accepted version of any event.

The same goes for the women's suffrage movement.

Leaders like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton are revered as the main players in the fight for suffrage, but they did not work alone and the story is far more nuanced than what you might have learned.

That's the thesis of Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner's virtual presentation for the University of Minnesota Duluth "Fact-Checking Feminism" at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct 27. Roesch Wagner is an adjunct faculty member of the Syracuse University Renée Crown University Honors Program and executive director of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Center for Social Justice Dialogue . She is also the author of " The Women's Suffrage Movement " and other women's studies books.

In her presentation, Roesch Wagner will highlight the inaccuracies of the history of women's suffrage and share the contributions of Indigenous, Black and other Women of Color who have been omitted.

Registration is required and can be completed at z.umn.edu/5vxx .

The event is sponsored by UMD’s Women’s Resource and Action Center (WRAC), Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program (WGSS), the Department of History, Political Science and International Studies, Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Department of American Indian Studies, and College of Liberal Arts Unit Change Team.

Additionally, Roesch Wagner and her efforts to correct the narrative of the women's suffrage movement — and re-insert a major leader, Matilda Joslyn Gage, who was erased from the history by her colleagues Anthony and Cady Stanton — will be featured in an upcoming article on duluthnewstribune.com.
