A man is in serious but stable condition after getting hit by a camper van in Qualicum Beach.

Police were called to the incident on 1st Avenue and Primrose Road around noon Saturday after witnesses reported seeing a swerving van hit an elderly man walking around the front of his car, according to Cpl. Travis Strong of Oceanside RCMP. Strong said the man bounced back and hit his vehicle, causing injuries to his leg and head.

The Qualicum Beach Fire Department and BC Ambulance attended the scene and the man was taken to Victoria General Hospital, according to Strong. He said the man is still in hospital in serious but stable condition.

Strong said the driver of the camper van was stopped several blocks down by other witnesses. He said witnesses were told by the driver, a middle-aged male, that he thought he’d hit a curb.

The driver is also now in hospital after being cleared of driving under the influence of alcohol and is being checked for a medical reason for to their driving behaviour.

“Alcohol was ruled out so we’re still investigating to determine the exact cause of the accident,” said Strong. “Whether he did something intentional, or was it something outside of his control that caused it.”
