Micho assistants Basena and Kajoba to handle Cranes for Rwanda game

Kampala, Uganda | THE INDEPENDENT | Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) president Eng. Moses Magogo has outlined plans for the replacement of  national coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevich, who terminated his contract over a pay dispute last week.

“There is a system challenge that we must address as a nation. National teams are paid by governments not federations,” Magogo told the press on Monday, adding that “We must know that FUFA has a big expenditure programme. If the government helps us,then we shall concentrate on development.”

Magogo said FUFA owes Micho only $54,000 and was paying him to an agreed schedule by both parties.

He said FUFA has decided in the interim that Moses Basena and Fred Kajoba take charge of the Cranes.

Micho talked highly of Basena at his last press conference, saying he is highly under-rated in Uganda.

Uganda will be anxious to have a new coaching team in place as they have two crucial matches this August, first against Rwanda in the African Nations Championship CHAN and Egypt in the World Cup qualifiers later.

Uganda beat South Sudan 5-1 to advance to the CHAN final qualifying round in Micho’s final game. They take on Rwanda in the first leg August 12.

FUFA wishes Micho well

After quitting on Saturday, the Serbian football coach said he will announce his next destination soon, and confirmed talks on payment of his salary arrears and allowances which he said are over $64,000 ( about Sh230m) with FUFA had stalled, thus his decision to move on. Micho led Uganda Cranes to their first Nations Cup finals in 38 years.

FUFA wished Micho well, saying “FUFA would like to thank Mr. Sredojevic for the services rendered to the Uganda Cranes during his time as coach of the National team especially when he guided the country to the AFCON finals in Gabon for the first time since 1978. Ugandans will forever keep those memories with them.”
