To the Editor,

I write today to express my support for Lumbee Tribal Chairman Harvey Godwin, who is seeking another term as chairman of the Lumbee tribe.

I have known Mr. Godwin since I was a teenager, when he was the campaign manager for my father, Julian Pierce, during his run for Superior Court Judge. I have also had the opportunity to discuss serious concerns of the tribe with him over the last few years, and know that he has a sincere interest in our tribe achieving full federal recognition.

In the short time Mr. Godwin has served as current chairman, he has accomplished significant goals. To name just a few, he has developed a much needed relationship with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to assist the tribal government in successfully carrying out the housing program funded by that department while staying within the statutory parameters established in the law.

Mr. Godwin was the first Lumbee chairman to have our tribe highlighted at a Smithsonian museum in the nation’s capital when he worked with the administration for the National Museum of the American Indian to organize a massive presentation by the tribe that was seen by thousands of people. Mr. Godwin has increased programs and grants available to tribal members of all ages, particularly elders, veterans and youth.

Finally, he also recognizes the importance of maintaining our culture, and in that vein, worked to revitalize the Lumbee cultural center and support the creation of the stickball field. Mr. Godwin has sought economic opportunities for the tribe and burned the candle at both ends to be an integral part of our community.
