If you’ve driven along Highway 4 between Qualicum Beach and Port Alberni in the past week you may have noticed a BC Hydro transmission tower that doesn’t look the way it should.

BC Hydro was notified Thursday that one of its transmission towers, in Whiskey Creek, was leaning and in danger of falling over.

Crews quickly assembled and have been working for days to get it upright, while trying to make sure the lines don’t fall on the highway.

BC Hydro says it’s not exactly clear what caused the tower to start leaning.

“We’re going to be doing some investigative work, but at this point our priority is making sure it’s safe for the public and the crews doing the work,” said Ted Olynyk, the community relations manager for BC Hydro on Vancouver Island.

“Then we’ll go further from there and determine what caused the incident to happen.”

A neighbour says a company was digging near the base of the tower which may have caused it to become unstable.

BC Hydro says it doesn’t know how long it will take to make the tower secure.
