SR 67 to Grand Canyon North Rim closing Dec. 2 for winter
PHOENIX – In another sign that winter is fast-approaching, State Route 67 to Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim is scheduled to close for the season on Monday, Dec. 2, unless snowfall warrants closing the highway earlier.
The Arizona Department of Transportation closes SR 67 each winter due to anticipated heavy snowfall. The 43-mile highway travels through an area that often receives more than 9 feet of snow in a season. US 89A will remain open at the junction with SR 67 in Jacob Lake.
SR 67 normally reopens with North Rim facilities in mid-May.
ADOT reminds motorists to drive with caution this winter and offers these tips:
- Slow down: Drive defensively. Be patient and allow additional time for your trip.
- Respect the plow: Give snow plows plenty of room to work.
- Prepare: Pack a car safety kit that includes a fully charged cellphone, warm clothings, snacks, water and other items listed at azdot.gov/KnowSnow.
- Gas up: Have plenty of fuel so you can stay warm in case of an emergency.
- Think: If a travel app suggests taking an unpaved road, your settings may be off. Don’t risk getting stuck in a remote area.
- Research: Check weather and road conditions before you leave. Let someone know your route.
Real-time highway conditions are available on ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site at az511.gov, the AZ511 app (download for Apple or Android devices) or by calling 511.
